Tips for the independent traveller!

Tips for the independent traveller!

The thought of travelling alone can be quite daunting, but then, the best experiences do not come out of fully planned trips! So, here are a few tips by Ansoo Gupta, a frequent traveller, to keep in mind before you set off into the wild, blue yonder:

FLIGHT FAR EFRIGHT
Look out for promotional offers from local airlines and budget travel websites. If you are not sure about how long you intend to stay in one place, then do not book a return trip in advance. Once you reach the destination and figure out your plans, you can always make a reservation later.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Try not to spend too much money on expensive restaurants and over-priced imported food items just because you recognise them. Get a feel of the local culture and opt for smaller eateries, the authentic food is best served by the ‘mama-papa’ joints! Go to a grocery store at the beginning of your trip and pick up sandwich supplies or fruits, not only are they easier to carry around but will also save you money on that mid-afternoon snack!

Keep an open mind
Be flexible and accommodating about your plans or last minute cancellations. Remember you are travelling to get a taste of another culture. While going from one city to another, you might often find yourself wanting to extend your stay.

Trimming expenses
People often feel that travelling is very expensive but if you plan a basic framework of your trip well before, you should be able to save on airfare, concert tickets and even hotel reservations. Put yourself on a budget from the start itself. If your daily expense limit is $40, then make a conscious effort to avoid crossing it. Indulge in making memories rather than buying expensive mementos.

Safety first!
The only advice that a woman traveller needs to keep in mind, is to not attract unnecessary attention to yourself. Read up on the cultural norms and try best to be alert at all times.
