ESALA PERAHERA

This festival is held in the Buddhist
month of Esala, on the
ten days leading up to the full
moon. The highlights are the
colourful processions involving
decorated elephants, traditional
dancers, fire jugglers
and whip crackers. Esala Perahera
is celebrated to summon
the gods so that farmers
are blessed with fertile crops.
