9 Best Railway Journeys on the Earth

In a modern world where traveling between destinations is viewed as a waste of time and resources, it is hard to actually comprehend the beauty of some of the most spectacular rides on the planet. Far less comfortable, yet far more beautiful and interesting, the time spent between two destinations is equally captivating and offers many sights and sounds.
While we are very much in a century where we have ‘no time to stand and stare’, there are still some awesome train rides across the globe where the trip itself turns into a destination. So how about hopping on these 10 grand train journeys?
Glacier Express
glacier-express
Arguably the slowest ‘express’ on the planet, the 180 mile ride on this delightful route takes a good 8 hours. Not that we are complaining about the pace as this offers you loads of time to catch a glimpse of the magical panorama that lies on its path, which links the two mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. 291 bridges, 91 tunnels and an altitude of 6,670 feet make this train ride similar to an expedition through fairyland.

Linking some of the best cities of Europe including London, Venice, Rome, Budapest or Prague, the Orient Express is the most charming way to travel on tracks. With scores of movies, novels and romantic Hollywood scenes captured on this luxurious trip, this is one for those with deep pockets. The three day trip past the beautiful countryside of France, Switzerland and Austria will cost well over 2,000 Euros for the old-age charm of the Orient Express.
Pride of Africa

The Pride of Africa is a train journey that no nature lover should ever miss if they wish to explore the beauty, majesty and the hidden grandeur of the spectacular Dark Continent at a leisurely pace. Apart from the impeccable comfort it has to offer, the once in a year trip planned on the ‘Pride of Africa’ will take you on a 14-day epic expedition through Cape Town, Dar Es Salaam, Kimberley, Pretoria, the Kruger National Park, Beit Bridge, Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, Lusaka and through Tanzania to Dar Es Salaam.

Billed as the most luxurious train in the world, you’d better not lose the opportunity if you’re planning a romantic vacation through the heart of Southern Africa.
Eurostar

While not many will really be happy with the fact that you get to spend plenty of time in the Eurostar under the sea, it sure offers a great mix of comfort and class. Apart from getting you to your chosen destination in a pretty short time, it is a much better option compared to choosing the flight between London and Paris. Innovative …
Flam Railway

Remember the awesome Norwegian Fjords? Well, here is a train ride through the world’s longest fjord Sognefjord, where on a 20 kilometer trip you’ll get to see an amazing descent from an altitude of almost 3,000 feet into the fjords of Flam. The ride looks both enthralling and hair-raising with its narrow passage way and the unforgettable sights.

Palace on Wheels

Step on the Palace on Wheels and you will find exactly what you have been promised with the name. The train that starts from Delhi in India and ends up in the royal state of Rajasthan, offers complete luxury on tracks, much like the pampering enjoyed by royal kings in the days long gone. Just to roll back time, a steam engine is used to pull the train initially out of Delhi, adding further to the experience. An elephant welcome in Jaipur, lunch at the Lake Palace in Udaipur, a camel safari near Jaisalmer and an afternoon at the Taj Mahal; the Palace on Wheels is the most comfortable way to explore India.
Eastern & Oriental Express

Stretching between the ultra-modern Singapore and Bangkok, and traveling through lush green tropical forests, the Eastern and Oriental Express is modern, stylish and comfortable.

Apart from all the delights it offers in terms of cuisine and hospitality, the train journey presents a perfect window into South-East Asia, its changing topography and the contrast between its urban present and its naturally-endowed past.
Royal Scotsman
royal-scotsman_1

If you are getting on board the Royal Scotsman, then you must have really deep pockets – it’s the most expensive train ride on the planet. Just consider the fact that a 4-day trip on the Royal Scotsman costs more than an entire 19-day first-class trip on the Trans-Siberian, and you will get the idea. The observation car accommodates 36 passengers (yes, only 36 passengers allowed) in comfortable armchairs along with cabins specially designed for dining and other purposes.

The train pulls over at night when you need to sleep and while the trip offers a great passage through little known waterfalls, mountains and valleys, it is obviously not for everyone.
Trans-Siberian Railway

There is hardly any doubt that a 6000 mile ride across the vastness of Russia that carries you over a distance of one-third the planet is the grand daddy of them all. The Trans-Siberian train ride is a journey that has already achieved a mythical status for the vastness it encompasses and the magnitude of brilliance that it has in store.

From Vladivostok across Siberia to Moscow and then to St. Petersburg, the 19-day ride offers more than you could ever find on any other train. Carriages once used by the Politburo are fitted with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a sitting/dining-room, complete with private chef. Carrying you in comfort across seven time zones, this is the ultimate experience on tracks.
It is a unique feeling to carry home when your whole journey becomes your destination as there is never a dull moment on your trip. Instead of waiting for fun and good times to start rolling as you sit in your airline seat, the great train journeys turn every moment into a memory you can cherish for a lifetime.

AFTER HSC : Look beyond the basic courses

Look beyond the basic courses

Regardless of your percentage, there are several career–orientated focused study options after the Class XII results

With the HSC mark sheets distributed yesterday, most students and their parents face a big dilemma starting this morning onwards – figuring out their future plan of action in case the cut-off percentages are too high for conventional courses. The good news is that the potential for career-oriented courses has widened considerably and the opportunities available in industry focused degree and diploma courses are far greater than ever before.

Specialisations available
From insurance to mall management, hospitality to fashion, event management to jewellery designing, animation to IT, there are a plethora of specialisations that one can consider. Depending on the aptitude and areas of interest, there are courses for future professionals in field like media, fire and safety, hospital management, etc.

New modules
Distance learning course options are also much more structured now, with weekend classes along with online tutorials, libraries where the student can access videos of missed lectures and so on. The scope to 'learn while you earn' is now opening up at a younger age, while fellow students slog away in their traditional courses and consider employment options only after graduation.

Mindset shift
However, this requires a mindset shift on the part of the parents as well. They would have to put aside their preset concepts from an earlier era and seriously consider what the job market requires in the current scenario. For all you know, some of these super-specialisation courses may just offer better career opportunities after graduation rather than the conventional category.

Inspiring cases
In fact, several students have been exploring this path after their XII standard and are reasonably confident that their decision was the right one. Many are poised to take up careers shortly and could conceivably have an edge in the job market compared to those who scored a higher percentage at the XI standard and gained admission in a coveted course.

Multiple options
Jolina Pinto, a B Com student from St. Andrew's College, shares that "Deciding on a career path was a big question in front of me. During my schooling I wasn't sure what career I will choose. I decided to opt for CA when I was in my junior college and since my aunty is also a CA, it encouraged me more to go in for the same. My parents were also happy with it. Right now I'm doing my B Com and CPT simultaneously.

Courses matter
Saurin Shah, a BFM student at M.K.S College, explains, "I always wanted to do something practical so I opted for Bachelor in Financial Management. I thankfully got the percentage required for this course but couldn't get the college that I wanted. Since there is a very good demand for finance professionals nowadays, it can be beneficial in future. I explained all the details about this course to my parents and they were also happy with it."

Changing attitudes
Huzaifa Sarang, a Mechanical Engineering student at Saboo Siddik College, had decided to do my engineering when he was 10 years old. "But it wasn't due to the fact that I was charmed by the field, it was because my parents wanted to me to be one. I got a high percentage so I got admission for engineering and my parents were also very glad. Initially I thought it's not my cup of tea but then as I was through facing it, it was sublime. No other field is as interesting as engineering, I felt. Discovery Channel became my inspiration and as I know most of the things, I want to become a professor in future.

Tough decisions
Anusha Jani, a BCA student at Sarvodaya College, reveals that "Initially I was doing B Com and BCA simultaneously but later on it started becoming too hectic. So, I quit B Com and continued with my BCA. I like computers so I plumped for this field. I would further like do my MCA (Master in Computer Applications) and make some software."

Simultaneous courses
Danish Mulla, a B Com student at Burhani College is doing the B Com and BCA courses simultaneously. "Before I did not thought about doing Bachelor of Computer Application so I took up B Com. Later on I heard a lot about BCA through my friend so I was keen about it. I spoke to my college professors about this and also discussed all the necessary information with my parents. They were also happy with my decision. I've chosen this course because I like computers."

Creative pursuits
Clive Lobo, a B Com student at St. Andrew's College, was satisfied with the percentage he got in XII standard but was confused too. "I was not sure which career option is beneficial for me. After completing junior college, I decided to also do an animation course as I find it very creative and interesting and my parents are also supporting me. Now I'm very passionate about this field and my future plan is to work for a big animation company like Disney Pixair or Dreamworks."

Making choices

Sarvam Patel, a S. L College student who just appeared for the BCA final year, points out that "I like creativity so I'm very passionate about animation. I'm planning to do my animation course along with my MBA after graduation. I did my BCA just because my parents wanted me to do so. I like to be creative as I also have a very creative mind so I chose to do my animation course and hope I'll do very well in this field."
So don't despair, whatever your percentages, there's always some course available to brighten up your career graph.

Vivid Sydney, an ongoing cultural festival in Australia

Australia ahoy!
Vivid Sydney, an ongoing cultural festival in Australia, brings together international and local artistes

It is that time of the year that the city of Sydney shines brighter than sunshine! Vivid Sydney — the annual cultural festival of Australia — that began last week is a show that sees the biggest names in culture come together under one banner.
The festival includes over 40 stunning light art installations in a free outdoor exhibition where children are encouraged to climb on interactive sculptures and aspiring photographers can put their night camera settings to the test. Iconic buildings around Circular Quay have been transformed like never before with 3D projection technology and laser techniques; while Sydney's Campbell's Cove serves a masterpiece of giant flame with five nightly performances of the Fire Dance spectacular. The Sydney Opera House is the focal point of the festival with Vivid LIVE, a music program comprising local and international artists.
"Vivid Sydney aims to illuminate the city with creativity and inspiration in ways we have never seen before," says Ignatius Jones, executive producer of the festival. "We are working with our best and brightest talents in the creative industries, and inviting international creative minds to Sydney to show off what they can do, to swap ideas and most importantly reach out to, the public and electrify us with their creations," he adds.

The 18-day long festival, that started on May 27 is on till June 13, and is defined by a brilliant line up of both international and local artistes including Bat for Lashes, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, The Avalanches, Cut Copy, Horse Meat Disco and The Crystal Ark. Legendary jazzman, the 'Saxophone Colossus' Sonny Rollins will celebrate his 80th birthday on the Sydney Opera House stage, and renowned British act Spiritualized will perform their magnum opus 'Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space' in its entirety with full choir and orchestra. Vivid Sydney's pop-up bar, The Sony Lounge, will be set up in the Western Foyers of Sydney Opera House with an ever-changing menu of DJs and a daily radio program on Triple J presented by Belgian brothers 2ManyDjs.

Vivid Sydney being one of the biggest cultural fests of Australia attracted more than 300,000 people in 2010. The number is expected to go up to 400,000 this year. It is touted to be a sensory experience for all and sundry. A gigantic sketchpad is put up for people to draw their own light art. Public talks and debates too are a part of the regular activities.
